What to do if you get sick right before your vacation?

Tips on how to recover quickly and not ruin your long-awaited trip.

Why is it important not to delay treatment?

A vacation is a chance to recharge and regain energy. But falling ill 2–3 days before departure can disrupt all plans, especially with a busy schedule and chronic stress. Ignoring the first symptoms ("it will pass on its own") often leads to a prolonged illness and traveling with a weakened immune system. Modern medicine offers quick solutions for diagnosis and recovery, allowing you to regain your health in just a few days.

Home first aid – three simple steps

If you wake up with a fever, headache, or general weakness, don’t panic. These three steps can help stabilize your condition at home:

  1. Fever reducers
    1. If your temperature is ≥ 37.8 °C, take a fever reducer (such as paracetamol or ibuprofen according to your body weight).
    2. Rest for at least 24 hours.
  2. Plenty of fluids
    1. Drink warm water, herbal teas, or electrolyte drinks.
    2. Maintaining hydration speeds up toxin elimination.
  3. Monitoring symptoms
    1. If there’s no improvement within 24–36 hours or if breathing difficulties or high fever develop, it’s time to see a doctor.

Critical tests before traveling

To determine the cause of illness and rule out serious infections, take the following tests:

  • Complete blood count (CBC) – identifies inflammation and anemia.
  • C-reactive protein (CRP) – helps distinguish between viral and bacterial infections.
  • PCR or rapid tests (COVID-19, flu, colds) – recommended for cough and sore throat.

Most clinics provide results within 1–3 hours. Online consultations allow you to discuss the results with a doctor, get recommendations, and receive an electronic prescription without visiting a clinic.

Comprehensive recovery plan

  • Nutrition – proteins, vegetables, whole grains; avoid sugar and fast food.
  • Vitamins – C, D, B-complex, magnesium (if experiencing insomnia).
  • Sleep and rest – 8–9 hours of sleep, minimize screen time 2 hours before bedtime.
  • Allowed activities – outdoor walks if there is no fever.
  • Psychological well-being – breathing exercises, stress reduction.
